ISLAND LODGE -
There’s an old joke that, in heaven, the cooks
are French, the policemen are English, the lovers are
Italian and it’s all run by the Germans; while
in hell it's reversed (English cooks, Italian management
etc). Well, that's all wrong. In heaven the cooks are
African, the one ‘policeman’ is a laid-back
Aussie and it’s all run by South Africans. We
know this is true, because we’ve been there. (Lovers
aren’t provided, by the way – you should
bring your own).
So where is this heaven? It's a tiny island near Zanzibar,
off Africa's eastern coast. Thickly wooded with palms
and whistling pines, ringed by a continuous white-sand
beach and set amid sparkling turquoise waters, it’s
pretty much as you would expect heaven to look. Idyllic.
There are ten secluded bandas (bungalows) made from
thatched palm leaves and pine branches, open to the
cooling breeze, with their own bathroom and shady porch.
A stone’s throw away is the dazzling beach, whose
waters teem with exotically-colored fish and coral forests
that most divers only dream of.
